Tata Motors was founded in 1945 as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO) to manufacture locomotives and heavy equipment. In 1954 the company partnered with Daimler-Benz to produce commercial trucks. It entered the passenger car market in 1991 with the Tata Sierra, India's first SUV. The breakthrough came in 1998 with the Tata Indica, India's first fully indigenously designed and built passenger car, which established Tata as a serious carmaker.
In 2008 Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover from Ford Motor Company for US.3 billion, instantly transforming into a global automotive player. That same year Tata unveiled the Nano, the world's cheapest car at US,500, aiming to make car ownership accessible to millions. While a technical achievement, the Nano struggled with branding and safety perception and was discontinued around 2019.
The Nexon EV launched in 2020 became India's best-selling electric vehicle, powered by Tata's Ziptron EV technology. In 2024 the company launched the dedicated TATA.ev sub-brand and unveiled the activ.ev architecture for future electric models. In 2025 Tata demerged its commercial vehicle and passenger vehicle businesses into separate listed companies.
Tata's most significant innovation is the Tata Indica, India's first indigenously designed passenger car, which proved that an Indian company could develop a competitive modern car from scratch. The acquisition and successful turnaround of Jaguar Land Rover demonstrated that an emerging-market automaker could own and operate prestige Western brands profitably.
On the technology front, Tata developed the Ziptron high-voltage EV architecture powering the Nexon EV and subsequent models. The activ.ev platform announced in 2024 is a dedicated pure-electric architecture designed for Indian conditions. Tata also pioneered safety in India, being the first manufacturer to achieve five-star Global NCAP ratings on multiple models.
