Rover

History

Rover was founded in 1878 by John Kemp Starley and William Sutton in Coventry as a bicycle manufacturer. In 1885 the company invented the Rover Safety Bicycle, which established the modern bicycle design of two equal-sized wheels with a chain-driven rear wheel. Rover expanded into motorcycles in 1902 and produced its first car, the Rover 8, in 1904.

Rover built a reputation for solid, well-engineered cars throughout the twentieth century. The P4 series (1949-1964) established Rover as a manufacturer of refined touring cars, followed by the P5 which became the official car of British prime ministers. The P6 won European Car of the Year in 1964 with its innovative monocoque construction. The Range Rover launched in 1970 created the luxury SUV segment and remains one of the most influential vehicle designs in automotive history.

Rover became part of British Leyland in 1968 and was nationalized in 1975. A Honda partnership in the 1980s and 1990s produced shared-platform models. BMW acquired the Rover Group in 1994 but sold Land Rover to Ford in 2000. The remaining Rover and MG businesses formed MG Rover Group, which collapsed in April 2005 with over 6,000 job losses. The Rover brand is now owned by Jaguar Land Rover (Tata Motors) and is dormant.

Innovations

Rover's most transformative innovation was the Safety Bicycle of 1885, which created the bicycle design still used worldwide today. In the automotive sphere, Rover pioneered the luxury SUV concept with the Range Rover in 1970, combining go-anywhere capability with unmatched comfort and creating a segment that dominates the global luxury market.

Rover was also a leader in gas turbine car research in the 1950s, building prototype jet-powered cars including the Rover-BRM Le Mans racer. The Rover P6 was one of the first cars to use monocoque construction in a mid-market sedan, and the Buick-sourced aluminium V8 engine Rover adopted in the 1960s powered Land Rover, Range Rover, Triumph, and Morgan vehicles for decades.
