Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung as part of the Hyundai Group, a South Korean conglomerate that began in construction and civil engineering. The first model, the Cortina, was built under license from Ford Motor Company in 1968, giving Hyundai's early experience in mass production.
