Cupra began as the high-performance division of SEAT, named after the "Cup" race series that SEAT dominated in the early 2000s. The Leon Cupra hot hatch earned a reputation as a Golf GTI rival with sharper handling and better value, and the Cupra badge became synonymous with SEAT's most focused driver's cars. In 2018, SEAT management decided to spin Cupra off as a standalone performance brand, following the model established by Mercedes-AMG and BMW M.
The newly independent Cupra launched with the Cupra Ateca, a performance SUV that was effectively a SEAT Ateca with more power, sharper styling, and a more premium interior. The brand quickly expanded with the Leon Cupra and the Formentor, the latter being Cupra's first model developed entirely in-house without a direct SEAT equivalent. The Formentor established Cupra's design identity: copper accents, aggressive Matrix LED lighting, and a cabin that blended sportiness with premium materials.
Cupra has been one of the fastest-growing brands in Europe since its launch, appealing to a younger demographic that wants performance without the premium price of German alternatives. The brand has embraced electrification with the Born, a dedicated electric hatchback on the Volkswagen Group MEB platform, and plans a full lineup of plug-in hybrid and electric models.
The Cupra Formentor was the brand's first bespoke model, not shared with any SEAT equivalent, and established Cupra's independent design identity with its copper-accented grille, unique light signature, and aggressive surfacing. This was a risky move for a brand spun off only a year earlier.
Cupra's "Cupra Mode" in the Formentor VZ5 (featuring a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine borrowed from Audi RS3) includes a drift-mode setting that sends full torque to the rear axle, making it the only compact SUV with a factory drift mode outside of the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45.
The Cupra Born was among the first performance-oriented electric hatchbacks on the Volkswagen Group MEB platform, pre-dating the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX and demonstrating that EV performance could be accessible and fun, not reserved for six-figure supercars.
