Why Ferrari Still Builds Every Engine by Hand
Walk into Ferrari's engine assembly facility in Maranello, and you will see something that looks out of place in 2025. There are no rows of robotic arms performing repetitive tasks. Instead, each engine is built by one technician, working alone, from a bare block to a finished, firing unit.
This process is known as "uno per uno" one man, one engine. It was introduced in the 1950s when Enzo Ferrari insisted that engines deserved the same care as a Swiss watch. The practice has survived every wave of automation because Ferrari believes it produces measurable results. Each technician stamps their name on the engine they assembled. If a problem emerges on a test bench or later in a customer car, the builder is identified immediately. There is no chain of handoffs to audit, just one person who owns that engine completely.
The financial argument against manual assembly is obvious. Robots are faster and do not take coffee breaks. But Ferrari produces roughly 14,000 engines per year across all models. That is a fraction of what Toyota or Volkswagen produces in a week. At that volume, the premium for hand assembly is absorbed into the price of the car. The question is not whether Ferrari could automate. It is whether automation would improve the result. The company has concluded that it would not.
Every Ferrari engine also undergoes a cold test and a hot test on the bench before it ever touches a chassis. The hot test involves running the engine up to redline while technicians listen for irregularities with trained ears. This acoustic inspection is still preferred over vibration sensors for detecting certain types of bearing noise and timing irregularities.
