What It Is Like Building an Independent Car Platform
Building a car platform from scratch in an industry dominated by giants is not something you do because you think it will be easy. You do it because the existing options do not work the way you think they should.
Carviano started from a simple observation: the car buying experience is fragmented. Buyers browse scattered listings, wonder whether the photos are recent, question whether the car is still available, and hesitate before contacting a dealer because they do not want to deal with follow-up calls. Dealers, meanwhile, spend money on leads that often do not match their inventory.
The platform was designed around a matching-first approach. Instead of asking buyers to search through thousands of listings and guess which ones are relevant, Carviano asks them what they want and finds dealers who have it. That shift -- from browsing to matching -- changes the dynamic for both sides.
Building it meant making choices about what to prioritize. Editorial depth on brand history and innovation came ahead of building a massive vehicle database. Dealer tools for managing leads and conversations came ahead of complex pricing and comparison engines. The focus has always been on the connection between the buyer and the dealer, not on the volume of listings.
There is still a long way to go, and the platform evolves based on what actually works in practice. You can read more about the philosophy on the about page, and the product itself is visible across the rest of the site.
