Understanding EV Range, Charging, and Real-World Costs
Electric vehicles are becoming more common, but the way you think about "filling up" is fundamentally different from a petrol car. Understanding range, charging, and the real cost of electricity vs. fuel is key to deciding whether an EV makes sense for you.
Range is the number most people focus on, but official range figures from laboratory tests are usually higher than what you will see in real-world driving. Cold weather, highway speeds, and using the heater all reduce range. A car like the Tesla Model 3 Long Range is officially rated for around 360 miles, but real-world mixed driving in winter conditions might return closer to 280 to 300 miles. That is still plenty for most daily commutes, but it matters for planning longer trips.
Charging speed matters more than total range for most owners. Level 1 charging (a standard household outlet) adds about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour -- fine for overnight topping off but slow for full charges. Level 2 chargers, which you can install at home or find in many public parking lots, add 20 to 30 miles per hour. DC fast chargers, found along highways, can add 150 to 200 miles in about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the car and the charger.
The cost of charging at home is typically much lower than petrol on a per-mile basis, especially if you have a time-of-use electricity plan that gives you cheaper rates overnight. Public fast charging is more expensive and can, in some cases, approach the cost of petrol. For drivers who can charge at home, the savings are real. For those relying entirely on public charging, the math is less clear-cut.
Brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Volkswagen now offer compelling EVs with competitive range and fast-charging speeds. The market is evolving quickly, and the gap between different brands is narrowing. As Chinese automakers enter Western markets, more affordable options are becoming available.
