Electric vs. Hybrid vs. Petrol: What's Actually Right for You
The automotive industry is in the middle of a powertrain transition that has no modern precedent. Unlike the shift from carburetors to fuel injection or from drum brakes to discs, this transition involves replacing the fundamental energy source of the vehicle. Unsurprisingly, the debate has become polarized.
For most drivers, the decision comes down to three questions. How far do you drive in a typical day? Can you charge at home? And how long do you plan to keep the vehicle?
If your daily commute is under 150 km and you have a driveway or garage where you can install a level 2 charger, an electric vehicle is likely the most cost-effective option over a five-year ownership period. Electricity is cheaper per kilometer than petrol in most markets. Maintenance is lower because EVs have far fewer moving parts, no oil changes, and regenerative braking that extends brake pad life. The upfront cost is still higher than equivalent petrol models for most segments, but total cost of ownership often favors the EV by year three.
If you cannot charge at home or regularly drive more than 300 km in a single day, a plug-in hybrid is a pragmatic middle ground. A PHEV offers 40 to 80 km of electric range for daily trips, which covers the average commute in most countries, while retaining a petrol engine for longer journeys. The trade-off is complexity. You are maintaining two powertrains, which means more potential failure points and higher servicing costs than a pure EV or a pure petrol car.
If you live somewhere with limited charging infrastructure, keep your cars for 10+ years, or buy vehicles that are more than 10 years old, a petrol car remains the most practical choice. The longevity of EV batteries beyond 10 years is still being established. High-voltage battery replacement costs thousands of dollars, which can exceed the value of an older EV. Petrol cars from the last decade are reliable, familiar, and inexpensive to maintain. There is no shame in choosing one.
