Bugatti's Obsession With the Impossible
When the Volkswagen Group decided to revive Bugatti in the late 1990s, the brief was unusual for a car company. They did not ask for a profitable vehicle, a high-volume model, or even something that fit an existing market segment. They asked for the fastest road-legal car in the world, with no upper limit on development cost.
The result was the Veyron 16.4, a car that took over five years longer to develop than planned and consumed more than a billion euros in research and development. The central engineering problem was heat. A 1,001 horsepower engine produce staggering thermal loads, and no existing radiator or intercooler design could keep the Veyron from self-destructing under full throttle. Bugatti solved it by designing an entire cooling system around ten separate radiators, a solution so over-engineered that it worked.
The Chiron that followed in 2016 pushed even further. Its 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 produced 1,479 horsepower, and the engineering challenge shifted from power delivery to structural integrity. At 420 km/h, the tires generate enough centrifugal force to tear themselves apart. Michelin developed a specific compound and X-ray-inspection process for Chiron tires. Each tire costs roughly $10,000 and must be replaced after a single high-speed run.
With the Tourbillon announced in 2024, Bugatti has moved to a naturally aspirated V16 hybrid powertrain developed in partnership with Cosworth. The decision to abandon the W16 after two decades was partly driven by emissions regulations, but also by the reality that the W16 had been pushed to the physical limits of what forced induction could deliver in a road-car package.
